In the scope of two new Horizon Europe projects (SHITF2DC and AHEAD), I am hiring Post-docs and PhD students. The work will be developed in Funchal, the capital of Madeira Island, Portugal.
- Post-doc position: you should have a PhD in the areas of computer science, data science, and machine learning – preferably with applications to Future Energy Systems;
- PhD position: You should hold an MSc in computer science or related areas, including energy and environmental engineering. You should have experience with data science and machine learning – preferably with experience in Future Energy Systems.

About the projects:
Shift to Direct Current (SHIFT2DC)
The SHIFT2DC project is a forward-thinking initiative focused on revolutionizing how we use electricity. Its main objective is to promote the use of direct current (DC) power solutions at both medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) levels, making our electrical systems more efficient and sustainable.
The proposed solutions will be tested in different environments, including ports in the Portuguese Demonstrator. Port facilities typically have unique energy demands due to their extensive operations, making them an essential focus. The project will explore how DC power can improve efficiency, lower costs, and reduce environmental footprints in port operations.
AI-Informed Holistic EVs Integration Approaches for Distribution Grids (AHEAD)
The AHEADÂ project will create a simulation environment capable of predicting the most convenient location to place the electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and optimize both the usage of the power grid resources and the charging stations located in urban and rural areas. This simulation environment will exploit the unique features of currently available AI models and include two layers: the spatial mapping one (placing the chargers where the people need them to be), and the power grid one (placing the chargers where the grid can support them). Innovative smart charging algorithms will be designed and tested in the model to minimize the impact of EV charging pools on the network and ensure the consumers have economic benefits.
